As we say goodbye to 2017 and welcome 2018, many of us will find ourselves resolving to make this coming year better than the last. The most popular New Year’s resolutions include losing weight, saving money, and spending more time with friends and family. Rather than going it alone, why not get your family involved and resolve to make this next year a better one for all of you? Here are some New Year’s resolutions that you as a parent and your family can collectively commit to this year.
This is my favorite family resolution because it doesn’t cost a dime or require any advanced planning. Resolve to talk to each other, and yourself, in a kinder way this year ahead. The world, and our own homes, could always use more kindness.
Exercise doesn’t have to be done in the gym on a treadmill sweating it out for thirty-minutes. Grab a ball and head to the local park. Find a walking trail and take a stroll. Grab your bikes and take a family bike ride. Exercise is always more fun when done with others and what better way to create healthy habits and set a good example for your family than by doing it as a family?
Become more eco-friendly.
Teach your children the importance of being eco-friendly. Start recycling. Turn off lights when you leave a room. Turn off the water when you’re brushing your teeth. Create a compost bin from your kitchen scraps. A quick Internet search will provide you with countless ways to make your home more eco-friendly.
Set aside device free family time.
No cell phones, no tablets, no interruptions. Play board games together or pop some popcorn and watch a movie. Whatever you decide, make it device free and enjoy the time spent together without outside interruptions.
Have family meals.
This resolution involves family members outside of those in your home. Once a week, or once a month, invite your family over for a meal. Remember, it doesn’t have to be anything elaborate or fancy. The goal is to spend more time with your family and BBQ’s are always a great option. BYO meat, anyone?
The possibilities are endless when it comes to setting New Year’s resolutions for your family. Find what works for you, make the activities age appropriate, and have fun with it! Once you choose your resolutions, write them down and keep them visible for everyone in the home to see.
Happy New Year! What are your family’s resolutions? Share them with us in the comments.
