YMCA of Greater New Orleans

The YMCA of Greater New Orleans began in 1852 to assist in the yellow fever epidemic. More than 165 years later, we are still more than just a gym — we’re a cause. As one of the nation’s largest and most trusted non-profits we work with individuals and families, organizations and communities, to help people live well, reduce their risk for chronic disease, and reclaim their health. We are the 5th oldest YMCA in the country, and for more than a century, our mission has been to provide critical programs that build a healthy body, mind, and spirit for all. With a focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility, the Y responds to society’s most pressing needs by developing innovative, community-based solutions, and uniting people from all walks of life to work for positive social change.

Our 5 branches serve as wellness centers, family centers, and community centers in Belle Chasse, Lower Plaquemines (Port Sulphur and Buras), East Jefferson and Covington. Beyond these community campuses, our Y’s mission-critical programs include: the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program, which helps individuals with prediabetes reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes; YMCA Educational Services (YES!), our adult literacy and workforce development program; YMCA Children’s Unified Benefits and Services (Y CUBS), which works to improve the lives of children living with autism; the Car Seat Safety Outreach program, our vehicle-occupant, safety-education program that provides car seats to low-income families within our Hispanic, immigrant, and refugee communities; and H2Geaux, the Y’s free, mobile, water-safety and –survival course.

Annually, our Y gives over $1 million in financial assistance to nearly 10,000 lower-income families, members, and program participants, including 600 children and youth. Across our association and community programs, we have work with over 40,000 people each year, including 4,000 seniors and 12,000 children.

School of Rock METAIRIE/New Orleans

School of Rock is a performance-based music school that offers private one-on-one lessons to students ages 4 – Adult interested in learning guitar, drums, bass, keyboards, and vocal techniques within the Rock genre. The student also has weekly group rehearsals where they learn songs in a real-world group setting and prepare for live performances for paying customers at actual music venues and festivals in the school’s region. School of Rock camps use the same method to teach children rock songs, using fun games and focused rehearsal to work towards a band performance at the end of the week. Every age and skill level will get the chance to perform in the band on the last day of the camp, tying together all the lessons learned during the week.
